Choosing What’s Possible

In August, we began with a simple invitation: Honor What You Already Know. In September, Jack and Jill helped us see what can get in the way of having Devotion to the Value.

Jill valued care, but became devoted to managing everything. Jack valued connection, but began protecting himself by withdrawing. Neither had forgotten what mattered. Their strategies were trying to keep them safe from the uncertainty of what might happen next. And perhaps you know this feeling too...

You miss someone, but don't call.

Protection says: Don't risk rejection. Connection says: Reach.

You're overwhelmed, but when help is offered, you say, I've got it.

Protection says: Stay in control. Care says: Receive.

Something needs to be said, but you keep waiting for the right moment.

Protection says: Avoid the discomfort. Honesty says: Speak.

Protection is compelling because it offers the safety of what we already know. It tries to keep us from being hurt, disappointed, or exposed. But it can also keep us from discovering what else is possible.

The strategy promises control. The value requires trust. Trust isn't believing everything will work out the way we want. Trust is choosing to live from what matters without knowing what will happen next.

So when protection appears, pause and ask: What am I afraid might happen? What matters enough to choose anyway?

Don't wait for the fear to disappear. Make the call. Accept the help. Begin the conversation. Then release the need to control what happens next. Protection doesn't have to disappear. It just doesn't have to make the decision.

At Peace Retreat, we create space to step outside the patterns of everyday life, listen more closely to what matters, and practice choosing from that place.

If you're feeling the need for that space, we would love to welcome you.
